Texas Senator to File Medical Marijuana Legalization Bill

TX Medical Marijuana Law

Texas state senator Jose Menendez announced this week that he would file a bill to legalize medical marijuana. The bill would permit adults with “debilitating and chronic medical conditions” to get prescriptions for medical marijuana from their doctor.

A previous bill written by Menendez was put in the hands of the Health and Human Services Committee, but stalled, according to Star Telegram.

In a press release, Menendez said, “Twenty-eight states have recognized the medical benefit of cannabis, including conservative states like Arkansas, Montana, and North Dakota. It’s time Texas steps up to the plate and provide real relief for our suffering patients.”

Senator Menendez also said, “Doctors, not politicians, should be determining what is best for Texas patients. This is legitimate medicine that can help a of variety people, from the grandmother suffering from cancer to the veteran coping with PTSD after returning home from war.”

The Compassionate Use Act was passed in Texas in 2015, which allows for low-THC medical marijuana oil use for patients with epilepsy. The new bill would be a major expansion on the Act.
